So there you are sitting down to a nice sushi meal, not even thinking twice that the tuna roll you’re about to put in your mouth is real tuna – except, that it isn’t. Excuse us, you say? Yes, that’s right, many of the foods that you enjoy, such as; your morning coffee, honey, tea, fruit juices, lobster – and many others aren’t actually real. They’re just made up of a lot of other ingredients to look like the genuine article. And with that, you should keep reading this article as it’ll make you think twice about what it is you’re exactly putting into your body.

Sushi

Think that’s real tuna or salmon in your maki roll? Think again. According to a study done by the marine conservation group Oceana, the majority of sushi restaurants are serving you diarrhea fish. Here’s what they had to say in their own words: “Consumers ordering white tuna get a completely different animal, no kind of tuna at all, 94 percent of the time. Your odds of getting served real white tuna in a restaurant are about the same as hitting zero/double zero on a Vegas roulette wheel, which is to say, not good. Instead of tuna, you’re likely eating escolar, which is nicknamed, disturbingly, “Ex-Lax fish,” because it’s known for giving people diarrhea for days.”

Parmesan Cheese

The next time you’re out shopping for Parmesan cheese to sprinkle onto your pasta, and you don’t see a ‘Made in Italy’ stamp – bad news – you’re buying a block of cheese made up of cheaper cheeses, and get this, wood pulp as well!

Honey

Did you know that honey is a completely unregulated food product. Yup. As weird as that is, this allows many to sell you a bottle full of fructose corn syrup and yellow antibiotics. Sweet!

Coffee

Larry Olmsted, author of the book: Food: Why You Don’t Know What You’re Eating and What You Can Do About It writes in it “Contemporary researchers have found twigs, roasted corn, ground roasted barley, and even roasted ground parchment. Adulteration is more extreme in powdered instant coffee, where substances found have included chicory, cereals, caramel, parchment, starch, malt, and figs.” Time to rethink how you start your day, huh?

Tea

So now that coffee’s ruined for you you’ll switch over to tea, right? Not so fast. You might be interested to know that inside your tea bag is a bunch of sawdust and leaves from other plants put there to make your tea last longer.

Spices

You know that package of turmeric you’ve got in your spice rack? Well it contains corn. That shaker of nutmeg – it’s been cut with pepper. And that oregano you’re sprinkling on your pork … full of mashed up weeds.

Lobster

See that stuffed lobster there? It’s about as real as the lobster you’re getting at chains like Red Lobster and Long John Silver’s, which is actually just ‘langostino’ – a mix of shrimp and crab meat – not real lobster.

Champagne

The next time you make a toast with champagne, check the bottle. If it’s not from the region of France Champagne, but some place like Long Island or the Finger Lakes, then you’re just celebrating with some really cheap sparkling wine.

Truffle Oil

So here some bad news for all you fancy truffle oil lovers, you’re actually just eating a bunch of chemicals to taste like real truffles. “Almost no truffle oil is real. Most chefs are fully aware that what they are selling is not a valuable fungi harvested by pigs in Alba but rather a cheap chemical cocktail from a laboratory. The truth about truffle oil, while kept from consumers, is well known in the restaurant business,” Olmsted writes.

Fruit Juice

You might want to rethink giving your kids those fruit juice packs. As Olmsted writes about the so-called ‘apples’ and other ‘fruits’ in there: “Even if the apple juice you buy happens to be real apple juice, you still may not want to drink it. The vast majority of apple juice sold in the United States is from Chinese-made concentrate, which as I have mentioned has repeatedly been found to contain banned pesticides and other chemicals.”
